Mo Lawal is considered one of the best wrestlers to come out of the large state of Texas. He started wrestling to support his football but it soon developed into his passion. Mo Lawal went on to win Texas State and represent Texas at nationals.

As soon as he was done with high school he was driving up to Central Oklahoma a powerhouse Division II school. At Central Oklahoma he was a 2x DII National champ. By his senior year Central Oklahoma and the Division II quest wasn?t large enough for MO. He transferred to the legendary Oklahoma State and vied for a Division I title. He fell a little short but took 3rd at 197lbs.

Mo was just getting started though and right away was contending for the 2004 olympic spot. In 5 years he went from not being a division I recruit to contending with the legendary Cael Sanderson, the Olympic champion, for the Olympic spot. Again he came short but kept at it. In 2005 Mo Lawal finally reached the national championship that had been avoiding him the two years prior. He represented the US in the World Championships in 2005 and had a strong performance yet did not medal.

After falling just short of making the Olympic wrestling team in 2008 Mo started training mma full time. He has no one place that he considers his training gym. His first fights have been in Sengoku in Japan and plans to one day get into the UFC.

Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed 'King Mo' Lawal knew he was going to beat Roger Gracie as soon as the ink hit the bout agreement.

The always confident Lawal had to wait more than a year to finally get back in action, but when he did he made the most of it with a first round knockout of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace.

Following the fight, Lawal spoke to MMAWeekly.com and admits that he's happy with the win, but still disappointed by the amount of attention paid to Strikeforce this week.

Nevertheless, he's got a paycheck in his pocket and as long as the fights keep coming and the checks don't bounce, Lawal is happy to fight in Strikeforce or the UFC. He also gives his thoughts on his teammates at AKA also winning on Saturday and pays homage to a pro wrestling legend.

Mo does not train at just one place, he spreads his training out and travels around southern California training with several top fighters and gyms like Dean Lister, Josh Barnett, Jokers Wild, Bas Rutten. While training his coach, Ryan Parson, attends all the training sessions and watches Mo to see if he can find any tips or pointers that will improve his game. Matt Lindland got Dan Henderson in contact with Mo so that he could give Hendo a Rampage like feel as a training partner which is how he ended up in southern California. 10 minutes before a fight he isn't too concerned about the fight because he has done the training and preparation. He is more concerned about his entrance and how that looks as they walk toward the ring. He does sometimes watch film on his opponents so he can get a feel of what they will bring. He both thinks and reacts while he is fighting.

Mo Lawal got the nickname King Mo from a friend Kami Barzini who said once you do what you gotta do you will be a king. King Mo mainly stays in the fighting world and will sometimes show up at a club, but when he likes to relax he is Mo Lawal. He is not a big partier but does like to go to clubs to relax form his training. He has been to clubs in a lot of places, and surprisingly one of the best places to go to clubs is Fargo, ND. He has heard good things about clubs in Japan but doesn't go. After his fights he will go out to eat with his family and friends, but doesn't go and celebrate his win but rather goes back to the hotel to reflect on his performance and what's going to happen next. He fought at heavyweight and 205 and wrestled at 185 but is willing to fight at any of those weight classes, where ever the money is. After he hones his skills in Japan he would like to eventually come and fight in the States in whichever organization has the best fighters.

Mo thinks the cage is more wrestler friendly and the ring better suited for strikers. He trains in both so that he will be able to be prepared for either. While he was a wrestler there were several fighters he looked up to like Kevin Jackson, Kenny Monday, Mark Kerr, Henderson, and Lindland, guys who he knew from wrestling that were having success in mma. Let's not forget Shonie Carter who knows how to dress. In 10-15 years he thinks mma will look like some Matrix shit and some very interesting stuff going on. He wants to fight until he can no longer continue to improve.
